HVAC Maintenance: Tips for Caring for Your Furnace During Spring and Summer

In the aftermath of winter, many homeowners may think that all they need to do regarding their furnace is stop using it. However, in many cases, there is more to it than that. HVAC systems and furnaces are complex devices that require year-round care. So, even if you are not using your furnace, there are tasks you must complete (or have a professional complete) to keep it well maintained during spring and summer.

How to Care for Your Furnace During Spring and Summer

Getting your furnace ready for spring and summer is important because when fall and winter roll around, the last thing you want is for your heat to be out. Ask anyone who has been stuck in the cold while their furnace is being fixed how important it is to keep your HVAC system ready for whatever Mother Nature throws at you. With that in mind, here is a list of tasks that may need to be performed on your furnace during the spring and/or summer (depending on the type of furnace it is) to make sure that it will be ready to work again in the fall and winter:

  • The burner flames need to be inspected
  • The burner and blower cavities should be cleaned out
  • The blower should be cleaned
  • The furnace filter should be changed
  • The pilot should be checked for dust
  • The flame sensor should be cleaned
  • The hot surface igniters should be checked for dust
  • The drive belt needs to be inspected
  • The bearings should be lubricated
  • The dampers should be checked and adjusted if necessary
  • The ducts should be checked for leaks and any leaks should be sealed

A few of these items you can do yourself. However, most of the items on the list should be performed by a trained HVAC technician. In some cases, completing these tasks can be dangerous and/or you risk damaging your furnace if you fail to perform the tasks correctly.
