How Does a Ductless Mini Split Work?

Most homeowners are familiar with systems like the furnace, or certainly the central air conditioner—especially in our warm and muggy climate. Fewer are familiar with the ductless mini-split. Don’t let this lead you to believe that this type of system does not deserve your attention, though. Ductless mini splits have long been widely used in the commercial sector, and in recent years have grown more and more common in residences throughout the country.

In order to understand how the ductless mini-split works, you need to first understand how heat pumps work. Now, there are cooling-only models of ductless mini-splits out there, but most homeowners opt for the heat pump model. With this, you get both a heating and air conditioning system in one.

During the summer, the ductless mini-split evaporates refrigerant indoors in order to remove heat from the air and then condenses that refrigerant outside in order to release its heat. Thanks to its use of heat pump technology, the ductless mini-split can also reverse the direction of its refrigerant cycle, allowing it to remove heat from the air outside, compress the warmed refrigerant, and then use that heat to warm up the interior living space! This is what makes the heat pump in general so efficient when heating homes. However, ductless mini splits take things one step further.

How They Distribute Conditioned Air

As the name suggests, ductless mini splits do not use ductwork in their operation. Instead, they use individual, wall-mounted blowers in order to distribute conditioned air throughout the house. The blowers are all controlled independently of one another, meaning that you don’t need to heat or cool your entire house to just one temperature throughout. That helps you to cut back on energy costs even further.

The fact that there is no ductwork also means that there is no risk of leaky ductwork. That means that you not only eliminate the risk of energy loss via duct leaks but that the system won’t pull pollutants into the ductwork and distribute them throughout your house, either. That helps you to protect the indoor air quality throughout your home.
