Living in Atlanta means that you’re used to hot and sunny days. You’ve even resigned yourself to fairly muggy summer seasons. What it doesn’t mean, despite the heat of summer that lingers for so long, is that your heater is not just as important as your AC. It gets very cold here in the winter, even if it can’t contend with the frigid conditions of Minnesota or the Northeast in general. So what heater should you use?
That’s a big question. There are a lot of heaters to choose from, and there is no single system that is going to be the right fit for every home or every homeowner. If there were, then there wouldn’t be so many to choose from! One of the best options is also, unsurprisingly, one of the most popular. The furnace! If you are thinking about using a furnace to heat your home, then you should probably pay attention to some of the benefits that they have to offer.
Choose Your Fuel
If you decide to use a heat pump or a ductless mini split, you’re going to have to use electricity to fuel those systems. Now, that’s not a bad thing, but it is limiting. Why? Because a lot of homeowners already have natural gas hookups, and they’d just as soon use this largely domestic and affordable fuel in order to heat their homes, too.
Furnaces may use electricity, but they are not as efficient as heat pumps when doing so. They may also use natural gas or, for that matter, propane. Whichever type of fuel you choose, the fact is that you were able to choose. The furnace keeps options open.
As long and hot as our summers are, it’s a safe bet that you use a whole-house air conditioning system in order to keep your home cool during the summer season. If you already have a central AC in place, why not use that existing ductwork in order to distribute heated air throughout your home, too?
With a furnace, you can do just that. Don’t get us wrong. Ducted heating systems have their drawbacks. If you do already have ducts in your home, though, you may want to make more use of them, rather than supplementing your ducted AC with something like a boiler system.
Save Money Up Front
Furnaces today are quite efficient. Even so, they may not be as efficient as something like a heat pump, especially considering the nature of our cooling season. That being said, furnaces do tend to be more affordable than something like a boiler, particularly when air ducts are already in place.
