Get Started on Your Pre-Season Air Conditioning Preparation

Technician working on a HVAC unitSpringtime temperatures have remained fairly cool for the most part. Most of us have stopped using our heaters for the season, save maybe for a couple of chillier nights. But you probably aren’t ready to start your air conditioner yet. That’s okay, so long as you don’t forget the importance of Roswell, GA air conditioning maintenance.

A professional AC tune-up allows our professionals to fully inspect and clean your cooling system, making any necessary adjustments and recommendations for repairs. Tackling this repairs pre-cooling season is essential to ensuring that your air conditioner will last all through spring and summer. Professional maintenance is not the only pre-season preparation you should make, however.

Maintenance Tasks Homeowners Should Manage

There are a number of smaller maintenance tasks that homeowners can, and should, handle on their own in between professional visits. Doing so will ensure that your system will work as effectively and efficiently as it is meant to.

Check Your Outside Unit. Your outside unit, the condenser unit, is housed behind panels that enclose electrical connections and other important system components. If inclement weather has damaged these panels, then you should call in a professional to ensure the safety and functionality of your system. Be sure, also, to remove any debris that can restrict airflow. This includes anything from tree branches and dirt to lawn clippings and leaves. Additionally, if you had your outdoor unit covered during the winter, be sure to remove it before turning the system on for the first time.

Change Your Air Filter. Were you aware that the air filter which comes standard with your air conditioner is there to protect the inside components of the system? Homeowners often assume that their purpose is to protect their indoor air quality. While clogged air filters can certainly impact your indoor air quality, they do something much more detrimental to your HVAC system. They restrict airflow, causing your AC to work harder than it should have to and increasing its wear and tear.

Clear Obstructions from Vents. Ensure that both your supply and return air grills are open and free of obstructions. Airflow can be blocked by a buildup of dirt or debris, or can even be impacted by furniture in front of them. Cleaning and checking all grills at the beginning of each cooling system is a good best practice.

Run It To Ensure Operation. After going through the previously mentioned steps, wait for a warm day and turn your air conditioner on. After a few minutes of it starting, you should feel the cool air. If the air coming through is warm or you don’t feel air coming through at all, then your next step should be to call a professional. If it is experiencing any issues, be sure to shut it off until our professionals can take a look—doing otherwise can cause more damage to your cooling system.
